I don't understand why...

Target missed its own internal alarm system.  40M credit card numbers could have not been stolen. No wonder the IT Mgr resigned.  So close... and then so blown.

Yuck of change

Sometimes I crave it, sometimes I abhor it. I always fear it, especially at work, where the devil you know (left) vs the devil you don't know (not yet hired), frying pan/fire kinds of thoughts. But rarely, if ever, is the former ever replaced by someone better, almost a given, like gravity. Happening now, I'm caught off-balance, reserving judgement, remembering it takes 6 months to grok any job. Considering other futures.

Retailing Daze

6.2.10   Longtime customer / current hippie John F. told a story today about the time Little Richard played at Hamilton College. The contract called for the backup band to play at his fraternity after the concert, which they did, after a rockin' show. During a break, a couple of the guys asked if there was any food around, as they hadn't had a chance to have dinner. John F. had kitchen duties in the frat house... and that's how he came to fix dinner for Jimi Hendrix!

6.3.10   A woman came over holding up a Hannibel Lecter box set and asking if we had "Headhunter." We didn't. She asked if I'd seen the movies; I said I'd seen "Silence of the Lambs" and read the other two, but that I had no suspension of disbelief with bloody images and so avoided them.
She looked very surprised, saying, "Then you wouldn't make a very good nurse."
"That's true," I agreed, "luckily I figured that out a long time ago." When she said she was a trauma nurse, I said, "Oh, so looking at movie blood is nothing for you!" She said it wasn't; in fact, she could always tell when the makeup & effects people had got the blood wrong!

Retail Daze

12.20.09   A man came in to buy a Friends box set today and had left the coupon at home. His wife faxed it to us at the store, for a 20% discount. It was an online only coupon, so I couldn't honor it. He called her back, but she had already begun faxing us the in-store 15% coupon. A novel solution to "having it in your hand."  Because I had to go upstairs twice to pick up the faxes, he bought a second box set.

09.18.09   An older woman called early on Sunday morning & asked if we had "anything like a Willie Nelson greatest hits" CD. I told her we had three different ones, like Greatest Hits, Essential, Very Best of...
She said, "Oh, okay. Now they don't have any of those hoot and hollerin' country songs on them, do they?  I don't like those hoot and hollerin' kind of country songs much..."

2.25.09
A guy, who somewhat resembled Philip Seymour Hoffman, came in looking for documentaries about English queens... Victoria & Elizabeth I, in fact. I found one on the shelf & ordered several other DVDs for him. Watching over my shoulder, he said, "I guess I'm sort of a nerd, but I really love the history of the British monarchy. I'd rather read a book than go out partying." "Not to worry," I commiserated. "I'm the same kind of nerd. There's plenty of us out here!" And when I saw the tat on his left forearm, I knew he was in a class of his own. "That's not..." "Yes, it is.""It's Elizabeth Regina's signature on the death warrant she signed for her sister Mary, Queen of Scots. I downloaded a picture, then enlarged it and made a stencil." "Whoa." "And Queen Victoria is going right here," he grinned, gently stroking the smooth underskin of his right forearm. Reeling slightly, I forgot to give him his change of a twenty.

2.25.09 A painter came in to buy some Leonard Cohen CDs. He showed me some of his work & I suggested he might want to see the Photo-Realism show at the Boca Museum of Art. He said he was on his way to Boca, to see about a commission from someone I might know.
-Who?, I asked, not knowing anyone in Boca -Abraham, Martin & John, he said. - Really? Dion? - Yes, he collects paintings of his blues idols & he doesn't like the Robert Johnson he has. I might paint a replacement for him. -Well then, exchange those Leonard Cohens, because you have to have his latest CD, Heroes. It's totally awesome. And make sure he autographs it for you. You like "Summertime Blues?" -Cochran or --- -Check it out....
He puts on the headset, heard the opening chords, then his eyes got big & his mouth erupted in a grin.
-Okay, I'll take it! -Wait, check this out.... "Blue Suede Shoes." More grinning. -Okay, I'll take it! -Wait check this out... "The Wanderer." -This is fantastic! -Shall I wrap it? Or just rip it open for you?
