in his essay about HORIZONTALITY on the site Thinking for a Living. Especially having spent Saturday in a nook. I think the scribes who wrote on the scrolls also wrote in columns. The scrolls themselves were rectangular because they came from processed sheep intestines. And of course, the Torah was done from right to left. Funny how scrolling is a verb now.
